How Long Does a Car Detail Take? (By Service Type)

How Long Does a Car Detail Take? (By Service Type) | Derek's Auto Detail Seattle

A car detail can take anywhere from 35 minutes to 5 hours. The time depends on what service you pick and how big your vehicle is.

At Derek's Auto Detail, we want you to know exactly what to expect before you book. This guide breaks down every service by time so you can plan your day.

    Why Does Detail Time Matter?

Most people ask about price first. But time matters just as much. You need to know if you can wait or if you should drop off your car.

Seattle weather also plays a role. Rain, Puget Sound salt air, and evergreen pollen build up on cars fast. A thorough job takes time. Rushing it means missing the details that protect your paint.

At Derek's Auto Detail, we handle 7 or more cars every single day. We have been doing this since 2002. That is over 22 years of getting the timing right.

How Long Does a Hand Car Wash Take?

Our Hand Car Wash (the Signature Hand Wash) takes 45 to 60 minutes. The price starts at $75 for small or 2-door vehicles.

This is our fastest service. It is great when your car just needs a refresh between full details. We hand wash every panel by hand. No drive-through machines that scratch your clear coat.

If you drive down Aurora Avenue North and your car is coated in pollen or road grime, this service gets it clean fast.

How Long Does an Interior Detail Take?

Interior services split into two options. The time difference between them is significant.

    Interior Detail, No Shampoo

This service takes 90 to 120 minutes. The price starts at $149. We vacuum, wipe down surfaces, and clean all the panels inside. It is a strong clean without wet shampoo work.

This is a smart choice if your interior is in decent shape. It works well for drivers in Green Lake, Fremont, or Wallingford who want a regular maintenance clean.

    Interior Complete with Shampoo

This service takes 3 to 4 hours. The price starts at $229. We shampoo the seats, carpets, and floor mats. We extract the dirty water out with professional equipment.

This is the right call if you have deep stains, pet hair, or spills soaked into fabric. Seattle dog owners know this one well. You can add Pet Hair Removal for just $40 more.

Plan to leave your car with us for most of the morning or afternoon. The carpets need time after shampooing too.

You can learn more on our interior detailing page.

How Long Does an Exterior Detail Take?

Exterior services also split into a few levels. Each one takes longer because the work goes deeper.

    Exterior Wax (Seal and Protect)

This service takes 90 to 120 minutes. The price starts at $144. We wash the car, then apply a protective wax coat. This seals the paint against rain and road debris.

Seattle gets a lot of wet weather. A good wax coat is one of the best things you can do for your paint. According to AAA, regular waxing helps preserve clear coat and maintain resale value.

    Exterior Polish and Wax

This service takes 3 or more hours. The price starts at $234. We machine polish the paint before waxing. This removes light swirl marks and oxidation. Then we seal the paint on top.

This is a big step up from a basic wax. If your car has dull paint from years of Pacific Northwest sun and rain, this will bring back the shine.

    Exterior Revival with Paint Correction

This service requires a quote. Time also depends on the condition of your paint. Paint correction uses a clay bar and multi-stage machine polishing. It removes deep scratches, heavy oxidation, and serious swirl marks.

This is the most detailed exterior work we do. It is not a quick job. But the results last for years.

See all our options on the exterior detailing page.

How Long Do Combo Packages Take?

Combo packages combine interior and exterior work. They take the longest but give you the most complete result.

    • Interior + Wax Combo, No Shampoo: 3 or more hours, starting at $279
    • Full Detail with Shampoo and Wax: 4 or more hours, starting at $324
    • The Works (Full Interior + Polish and Wax): 4 to 5 hours, starting at $404

The Works is our most popular full-service package. It covers everything inside and outside. If you want to drop your car off and pick it up looking brand new, this is it.

See the full breakdown on our full detail page.

Does Vehicle Size Change the Time?

Yes. Bigger vehicles take longer. They also cost more. Here is how our size pricing works.

    • Small or 2-door: base price, no extra charge
    • Sedan or 4-door: add $17 for the hand wash, $26 for other services
    • 2-row SUV or wagon: add $28 for the hand wash, $51 for other services
    • 3-row SUV, full-size, or van: add $35 for the hand wash, $81 for other services
    • Commercial, oversized, or truck: quote required

A 3-row SUV with a full interior shampoo will take longer than a sedan getting the same service. Plan for the upper end of the time range if you drive a larger vehicle.

How Long Do Add-On Services Take?

We offer several add-ons. Each one adds a small amount of time to your appointment.

    • Pet Hair Removal: $40 — adds time based on how much hair is present
    • Headlight Restoration: $85 — usually 30 to 45 minutes per pair
    • Ozone Odor Treatment: $25 — runs after the detail is done
    • Leather Deep Conditioning: $40 — adds 20 to 30 minutes
    • Decal and Vinyl Removal: $60 — time varies by size and placement
    • Bug, Tar and Tree Sap Removal: $40 — adds time to exterior work
    • Fabric Protection: $35 — applies after shampooing

If you add multiple services, plan for extra time. We will give you a more exact estimate when you book.

Should You Wait or Drop Off Your Car?

For services under 90 minutes, many customers choose to wait. Our shop is located at 8401 Aurora Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98103. There are coffee shops and stores nearby on Aurora.

For anything 3 hours or longer, we recommend dropping off. You can walk, get a ride, or explore nearby neighborhoods like Phinney Ridge, Green Lake, or Greenwood while we work.

Consumer Reports notes that professional detailing done right takes time. Shops that rush tend to miss spots. We do not rush.

Derek's Auto Detail has earned a 4.9-star rating over the last year by doing the job right every time. That means giving each car the time it needs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full detail take at Derek's Auto Detail?

A full detail with shampoo and wax takes 4 or more hours. The Works package takes 4 to 5 hours. Bigger vehicles may take longer.

Can I wait at the shop while my car is being detailed?

Yes, for shorter services like a hand wash or exterior wax. For longer jobs, dropping off is easier. Aurora Avenue North has plenty of spots to wait nearby.

Does adding pet hair removal take a lot longer?

It depends on how much hair is in the car. Light amounts add a little time. Heavy pet hair can add 30 to 60 minutes. We will let you know after we see the car.

Do larger vehicles always take longer?

Yes. A 3-row SUV or van has more surface area inside and out. Plan for the top of the stated time range if you have a larger vehicle.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least a few days ahead. We handle 7 or more cars per day and spots fill up. Weekends book faster. Call or get a quote online to lock in your time.
